Cliffside Elopement in Donegal

Donegal Elopement Photographer

Some love stories feel like they’re pulled straight from a movie, and Josh and Alex’s is truly one of them! As their wedding photographer, I had the incredible honour of not just capturing their day, but also getting to know the beautiful journey that brought them to a windswept cliff in Ireland.

Their story began simply enough. Josh and Alex met for tacos in Cincinnati, sharing laughs and easy conversation like old friends. Afterward, they walked along the river where Josh pulled out his drone, only to be surprised when Alex took the controls and flew it with ease. Little did they know, those early adventures were just the start—and their shared love for discovery and storytelling would lead them to some of the most breathtaking places on earth as elopement photographers/ videographers themselves!

A Return to Irish Roots

When it came time to choose a wedding location, the decision was deeply personal and meaningful. Josh’s father was born in Donegal, Ireland. Over the decades, he had built a treasure trove of fond memories visiting family and taking in the raw beauty of the countryside. Josh wanted to create his own beautiful, lifelong memory in one of his favorite places on earth, sharing his heritage with his bride.

And so, they found themselves in Ireland. The landscape was everything you imagine and more: rolling green hills, dramatic cliffs plunging into the sea, and a sky that shifted from moody gray to brilliant blue in minutes. It was the perfect backdrop for a love story that had already spanned continents. The decision to marry here wasn't just about a scenic location; it was about honoring family, history, and the deep connection Josh felt to this land.

The Most Magical Moment

Every wedding has a moment that stands out, one that perfectly encapsulates the couple's love. For Alex, that moment was a complete, heart-stopping surprise. She had dreamed of Josh playing the bagpipes in his full kilt on a cliffside in Ireland. But he had told her it would be too difficult to travel with the cumbersome instrument and all the necessary attire.

Little did she know, his sister and her friend had secretly conspired to bring everything with them. As Alex stood there, taking in the epic view, the unmistakable sound of bagpipes began to fill the air. She turned to see Josh, standing proudly in his full kilt, playing for her. How romantic is that!!

The Last Part

Later, they stayed at the lovely Owenea River Rest, where the celebrations continued with their first dance outside with all their guests watching them just before sunset, a magical sparkler exit, and exquisite food prepared by a private chef. This intimate setting made their wedding weekend even more memorable, filled with warmth, laughter, and the flavors of Donegal.

Being a part of Josh and Alex’s wedding was more than just a job. It was a privilege to witness a love so adventurous, genuine, and deeply rooted in what matters most. From tacos in Cincinnati to a glacier in Alaska, and finally to a cliff in Ireland, their journey is a testament to building a life filled with incredible memories. These are the moments that last a lifetime, and I am so grateful I could be there to capture them!
